Lares is an alternative trek to Machu Picchu that captures the intrigue of trekkers seeking unique cultural exchanges.
This 8-day custom travel itinerary begins in Cusco. Explore this charming Andean city while you acclimate to the high elevation and enrich your understanding of the Inca heartland on a guided tour. Then embark on your 3-day trek through the Lares Valley. This near 21-mi (34-km) trail traverses two stunning mountain passes and offers rare encounters with native weavers and farmers living in remote Andean villages. Afterwards, make a thrilling journey to see Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of the Incas.

If arriving early, you can also take in scenic Parque del Amor (Love Park) in Miraflores for views of Lima's gorgeous coastline.
Fly from Lima to Cusco. Upon arrival at the airport, meet our Inca Expert Travel representative for the short drive to your hotel in the historic center. Along the way, you will see stunning examples of the city’s hybrid Spanish-Inca architecture.
You have the rest of the afternoon to explore the city. Remember to take it easy on your first day at altitude.
Begin your day with a private guided tour of Cusco’s most important sites. Start with a visit to the Cusco Cathedral and Qoricancha. Later, see the impressive ruins of Sacsayhuaman.
Spend the afternoon at your leisure. Shop with locals at San Pedro Market or wander the streets of bohemian San Blas.
Today, you face a short but steep hike into the Lares Valley. Begin with a transfer from your hotel in Cusco through the Sacred Valley to Lares town, where you can enjoy a dip in the natural hot springs.
After lunch in Lares, begin the trek to the first campsite at Huacahuasi and enjoy the remarkable views.
After a hearty breakfast, continue your walk through the valley. The major challenge of today’s journey is climbing the high Ipsayccasa mountain pass situated at 14,600 ft (4,450 meters).
Descend to Patacancha, a traditional weaving village, and then take a 30-minute bus ride to Huallata. From here, it’s a 45-minute walk to the campsite at Pumamarka.
Enjoy breakfast and then visit Pumamarka archaeological site. Continue on the trail, descending into a gorgeous valley until you reach Yanahuara.
After lunch, transfer to Ollantaytambo and catch the train to Aguas Calientes, base town for Machu Picchu. Meet our representative for the short walk to your hotel and enjoy a good night’s rest.
Meet your guide for a memorable walk through the “lost city of the Incas” and soak in the majestic landscape that surrounds this important ruin. Finish up with last photos and then return to Aguas Calientes town for the return trip to Cusco.

Enjoy a final breakfast at your Cusco hotel. Then meet our representative for a transfer to the airport to begin your journey back home.
